about instructors

Our children's Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu classes are taught separately from adult classes by extensively trained Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu instructors who believe that every child is a winner! Kids learn primary fundamentals through advanced techniques, along with respect in a fun and safe environment. By using highly effective grappling skills instead of muscle, a small person can apply leverage and technique to overcome a larger person. Kid's receive individual attention and encouragement, learn how to remain calm, and gain confidence and courage to say "no" to peer pressure. Studies show that children studying martial arts have improved concentration and discipline, which increases success in school, other sports, and every aspect of life.

Steps to Getting your child involved in BJJ

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) is a martial art discipline that uses grappling and ground-fighting techniques instead of punches and kicks. BJJ can teach kids to be more confident and is also a solution for a small child who may be the victim of bullies. The fundamentals of bjj focus on how a smaller, weaker person can defend against a larger opponent through the use of leverage and flexibility. It is also excellent form of physical fitness. Most fights, including confrontations with bullies, end up on the ground, therefore this makes Jiu-Jitsu the most effective martial art for children.

Step1
Tell your children the history of the sport, and how it was developed to promote health and strength among young people in particular. Judo was originally taught to youngsters in an effort to build character, spiritual strength and physical fitness over 100 years ago. At NDBJJ we retain the same values by providing classes for youngsters that teach respect, discipline and how to have fun.

Step2
Take your children to our childrens class so they can observe a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu class in session. Once they see the enthusiasm exhibited by the other kids in the class, your children probably will want to enroll. As a parent, you will be comforted by the fact that the children instructors at NDBJJ are knowledgable and that your child's safety and best interest are their primary concern.

Step3
Support your children throughout their lessons. The classes may be rigorous but the gains in confidence and strength, compensate for the difficulty. If your child is having a specific problem during the class, speak with an instructor so that the issue can be resolved.

Step4
Reassure your child, jiu-jitsu is designed to conquer an opponent without inflicting too much pain. Share this philosophy with your child if he or she is skittish about being hurt during a practice. We also want to reassure you as a parent that safety is paramount at NDBJJ.

Testimonials

My daughter Alex has been practicing since summer of '08. She was hesitant at first because there were so many boys and not many girls. The reality is that it's a GREAT discipline for girls to learn as the holds and escapes can be applied to real life situations if they are threatened (rather than "hey, be still a sec while I chop-chop you!"). The instructors are patient and really seem to enjoy working with the kids and are careful to match them with others of their size and ability so everyone has a chance to be successful. It's a very low-key environment where no one is being judged and everyone is welcomed into the group. Alex has gained respect, confidence and learned to push herself and not be hesitant. - Eva R.
